The Legend

Yunnan is the name of a Southern Chinese province that has been a tea-producing region for close to two thousand years.  It is home to China's oldest wild tea tree, which is about seventeen hundred years old.  Yunnan's most senior cultivated tree is practically a seedling at only eight hundred years old!

Yunnan Gold, a black tea, is harvested and sorted into differing grades of quality and ripeness and then left to wither and undergo a type of pile fermentation.  During the fermentation, the buds of the tea harvest oxidize and turn a bright gold colour.

Yunnan Gold first gained its reputation for luxury when it became a favourite of Queen Elizabeth, who had it prominently displayed in a glass cabinet.  When it was first introduced, the rare tea could fetch nearly £900 per 500g.  Today, although now produced in much larger quantities and far more affordable, it still retains its sense of opulent indulgence and makes a fantastic cup with or without milk.

This is a gorgeous tea with leaves ranging from a medium green to gold. More than half of the leaves are golden in color so it certainly lives up to its name. Just looking at this tea, I wouldn’t have thought that it was a black tea as the leaves are not the usual deep green/black color nor are they smallish, twisted and wiry. The aroma of the dry leaves is strong. I am not able to pick out any one scent but my impressions are that of sweet fruitiness and smoke. In setting up my tea-maker, I used four teaspoons of leaves, a brew setting of 210 degrees and a steep time of 3 minutes. Looking at the resulting liquor, I am now able to believe this a black tea as color is a deep reddish brown almost the color of a cup of coffee. The aroma strangely enough now reminds me of butterscotch. This is a naturally sweet tea with a slight bite of pepper at the end of each sip. I also pick up hints of stone fruits. One sip will remind me of plums, the next peaches and yet another of nectarines. This is a delightful tea, one that lends itself to either quiet contemplation or drinking on the go. I have most certainly put it on my list of teas to pick up.

The dry leaves have a satisfying aroma of sweetness and pepperiness. The flavor produced from a three minute infusion in boiling water is rich and rewarding. What stands out most for this tea is the peppery flavor that lasts long after each sip. When I was first introduced to the wonderful world of Yunnan teas, I fell in love with the peppery aftertaste, and this tea delivers that spicy kick where other Yunnans have failed. What also appealed to me was the natural sweetness of this tea; this one is a self-drinker, no need to add sugar or milk to this tea.
